An angioplasty is a technique performed to clear coronary artery blockages brought on by CAR disease. Without requiring open cardiac surgery, it restores blood flow to the heart muscle. In an emergency situation, such as a heart attack, angioplasty may be performed. If your doctor has a strong suspicion that you have heart disease, the procedure can also be performed as elective surgery. PCI, or percutaneous coronary intervention, is another name for angioplasty. During an angioplasty, a long, thin tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel and directed toward the coronary artery blockage. At the tip of the catheter is a small balloon. The balloon is inflated at the heart artery's constricted location once the catheter is inserted. This causes the blood clot or plaque to press up on the artery's walls.
