When a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the body's deep veins, commonly in the legs, it is known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Leg pain or swelling may be a symptom of deep vein thrombosis. There may not always be any obvious signs. If you have certain medical disorders that influence the way blood clots, you may develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT). If you are immobile for an extended period of time, a blood clot may potentially form in your legs. For instance, you might not move much when you're recovering from surgery, an illness, or an accident; you might also not move much when you're bedridden. Because blood clots in the veins can rupture, deep vein thrombosis can be rather dangerous. Following that, the clots may enter the circulation and lodge in the lungs, obstructing blood flow (pulmonary embolism). Venous thromboembolism is the term used to describe the combination of DVT and pulmonary embolism.
