Peripheral nerve tumors are abnormal growths that develop in or near nerves. Nerves are tissue strands that carry impulses from the brain to the rest of the body. Peripheral nerves regulate muscles that allow you to move, blink, swallow, pick up objects, and do other tasks. Peripheral nerve tumors can develop in any part of the body. The majority of them are benign, which means they are not malignant. They can, however, cause discomfort, nerve damage, and loss of function in the affected area. Surgery to remove the tumor is frequently used as treatment. Other therapies may be tried if the tumor cannot be removed without causing damage to neighboring healthy tissue and nerves. Peripheral nerve tumors are classified into numerous categories. Tumors that form within nerves are known as intraneural tumors. Extraneural tumors put pressure on nerves. Peripheral nerve tumor symptoms arise from direct effects on the primary nerve or from the tumor pressing on surrounding nerves, blood vessels, or tissues. Although tumor size does not always dictate effects, it may be more likely to induce symptoms as the tumor grows. The cause of the majority of peripheral nerve tumors is unknown. Some have been connected to known genetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis (types 1 and 2) and schwannomatosis. Others could be caused by genetic alterations.
