The carotid arteries are the main blood channels that transport oxygen and blood to the brain. Carotid artery stenosis occurs when these arteries get narrowed. A stroke can occur if the narrowing of the carotid arteries becomes severe enough to restrict blood flow. A piece of plaque that breaks off might potentially obstruct blood flow to the brain. This, too, can result in a stroke. The majority of carotid artery stenosis is caused by atherosclerosis. In this disorder, fatty deposits create plaque along the inner layer of the arteries. The thickening narrows the arteries, reducing blood flow or totally blocking blood supply to the brain.
