The narrowing or obstruction of the blood arteries that convey blood from the heart to the legs is referred to as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in the legs or lower extremities. Atherosclerosis, the accumulation of fatty plaque in the arteries, is the primary cause of it. Although PAD can occur in any blood artery, it tends to affect the legs more frequently than the arms. The most typical sign of PAD is discomfort in the legs that worsens during physical activity like walking but goes away after rest. However, up to 4 out of 10 PAD sufferers report no leg discomfort. The buttock, hip, thigh, or calf may experience claudication symptoms, which include soreness, pains, or cramps when walking. PAD can manifest physically as muscle atrophy (weakness), hair loss, smooth, shiny skin, cool skin to the touch, decreased or absent foot pulses, sores or ulcers in the legs or feet that don't heal, and cold or numb toes. Pain while walking (that is relieved by stopping walking) is another sign that may indicate PAD.2,3
